According to the 2006 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, almost 2 million Americans are currently opioid dependent. The number of teenagers and adults who reported using opioid prescription painkillers non-medically in the previous month increased from 4.7 to 5.2 million in the past year. The alarming rate of opioid-dependent growth is taxing treatment resources; therefore, more is being done to expand access to care for patients with this illness. The Drug Addiction Treatment Act (DATA) provides qualified physicians the right to prescribe approved Schedule III, IV, or V narcotic medications (ie. opioids) to treat opioid dependence in the privacy of a medical office setting.
Currently, Suboxone and Subutex (buprenorphine/HCI) CIII sublingual tablets are the only medications approved under the DATA 2000 for the treatment of opioid dependence. Opioid dependence affects a broad base of patients, including people of all ethnic groups, educational and professional backgrounds, and economic status. In conjunction with counseling, this treatment paradigm offers patients the ability to have withdrawal symptoms and cravings medically managed in the privacy, convenience, and confidentiality of their doctor’s office.
